Using Wake-On-LAN and PXE to Improve Software Deployment
Presented by: Derek Smith & Beth Dalton - San Juan College
In today’s growing campus environments, the need for additional remote management and faster deployments has become increasingly important. This presentation will demonstrate how San Juan College has implemented the technologies of Wake-On-LAN and the Pre-Execution Boot Environment using the Altiris Deployment Solution. PXE, a technology which allows devices to boot off the network has enabled San Juan College to more efficiently deploy software images to new and existing computers. We will describe how we deployed images before the implementation of PXE, and why booting off the network is a superior technology that has streamlined and expedited software distribution. This presentation will also include a demonstration on the operation of PXE.
A separate but related technology, Wake-On-LAN, will also be discussed. Wake-On-LAN technology allows the IT staff at SJC to more effectively manage computer systems by remotely turning on computers. This allows administrators to schedule software distribution during non-peak hours while eliminating the need for lab assistants to turn on lab computers.

Setting a Smart USB Token for Authentication
Presented by: Jerry Gonzales - University of New Mexico
I would like to present a high level step by step process for setting up a Smart USB token security environment. A smart USB token, is a “thumb drive” like device that replaces the traditional Smart Card. The advantage is that every computer and laptop produced in the last 8 years have a USB port, therefore being able to use a smart USB token is built in. A traditional Smart Card requires a special Smart Card reader, which is available on some special laptops, but in my opinion 99% of computers produced today, do not have this special feature, therefore are not a practical solution for two factor authentication. I would like to demonstrate using screen shots, the setting up of a Public Key Infrastructure in a Active Directory environment. Then I would demonstrate how to setup the drivers for the Smart USB token, and finally I would demonstrate the actual process of logging into my secure environment using the thumb drive. I this point I don’t know if I will be able to log directly into my network for the conference center, because this is considered an untrusted site, so I might have to simulate this process.

Security Compliance: Is your institution ready for HIPPA, FERPA, GLBA, CALEA…?
Presented by: Bryan Cunningham - Morgan & Cunningham LLC"
In June of 2006, the courts officially upheld the FCC - Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). Colleges, University’s, library’s and companies providing internet access have just 18 months to comply! Brainstorm Networks in partnership with Morgan Cunningham LLC has a holistic approach to security solutions that are compliant with the National Security Agency’s (NSA) methodology which specifically address compliance to state and federal laws. The majority of the most significant network security breaches in Education in 2006 could have been avoided by updated security policy which mandated procedures specific to compliance of these laws. PRESENTER: Bryan Cunningham: (JD, Certified in NSA IAM) has extensive experience in information security, intelligence, and homeland security matters, both in senior U.S. Government posts and the private sector. Cunningham, now a corporate information and homeland security consultant and Principal at the Denver law firm of Morgan & Cunningham LLC, most recently served as Deputy Legal Adviser to National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. At the White House, Cunningham drafted key portions of the Homeland Security Act, and was deeply involved in the formation of the National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace, as well as numerous Presidential Directives and regulations relating to cybersecurity. He is a former senior CIA officer, federal prosecutor, and founding co-chair of the ABA CyberSecurity Privacy Task Force, and, in January 2006, was awarded the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement for his work on information issues. Cunningham has been named to the National Academy of Science Committee on Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures, and is a member of the Markle Foundation Task Force on National Security in the Information Age.

Edubuntu? What? FREE Operating System?
Presented by: Drew Einhorn - Supercomputing Challenge
"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". The Edubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to schools, through its customized school environment. Edubuntu is a free software system designed for school environments, and should be equally suitable for kids to use at home. Edubuntu is a free/libre/ open source GNU/Linux operating system. It is a bundled package that includes a FREE operating system and an office suite.
The Edubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Edubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.
These freedoms make Edubuntu fundamentally different from proprietary software: not only are the tools you need available free of charge, you, and thousands of developers around the world, have the right to modify and build upon your software until it works exactly the way you want it to.
Come learn about possible pilot programs in the Supercomputing Challenge, see how this works and what it would take for you to use it next week.

Teaching Introductory to Biology Online … Including the Labs
Presented by: Samuel R. Bachert - San Juan College
Biology has been taught online, successfully, for many years. However, the lab component has been lacking. Many universities and colleges may have tried the content online, but required students to meet face to face in a lab setting. This prevents students who live at a distance from taking introductory to biology; a typical graduation requirement for an Associates or Bachelors degree. In answer to this problem, ten labs have been developed to be delivered online. The labs combine virtual lab experiences with home based labs giving students the needed hands-on experience to prepare them for advanced Biology courses. Join the presenter for an “under-the-hood” look at a fully online Biology course.

Strategic Technology Alliance - Why a New Technology Strategy?
Presented by: Qwest
Technology and New American University Vision - How can our educational institutions expand their size and scope while simultaneously raising its academic quality? Costs must be contained while quality is increased, and all of this must be achieved in the face of mounting global and domestic competition, and a growing set of economic and technologic pressures. To accomplish this, Strategic Partnerships need to be formed to allow schools and universities to focus on their "Core" competencies of education, discovery and research.
Basis of Strategic Technology Alliance - Business Linkage - A Strategic Partner is not just another word for vendor. Strategic alliance must define a new relationship between educational institutions and its most important technology suppliers, one that recognizes the needs and objectives of both parties.
Core vs. Context - The response of vertically integrated industries to similar technological pressures is instructive. Technology strategists and business re-engineering consultants, advise many of today’s leading technology companies make the transition from vertical integration using a method he calls a Core vs. Context analysis.
Vertically integrated enterprises use a Core vs. Context analysis to focus resources to achieve leadership. Core activities are those which educational institutions need to concentrate their own talent, management, and internal resources on, because they are central to the enterprise strategy. Context activities, by contrast, are those that might be reasonably provided to educational institutions in partnership with other firms for whom those activities are Core.

- A file of transactions is produced each working day at Bank of America and it is sent to ENMU-R.
- The transactions are uploaded and processed within Banner
- Implementation
- The script that builds the encrypted MAM file is run daily on a scheduler, and the file is automatically sent by FTP to Bank of America.
- The Web Master at ENMU-R placed a link on ENMU-R’s homepage. It allows eligible persons to submit payments to ENMU-R through Bank of America.
- The script that retrieves the encrypted transaction file from Bank of America also runs on a scheduler on a daily basis. The file is decrypted once it arrives.
A program imports the payment transaction data into the Banner TBRACCD table for posting.

Using Best Practices When Designing your Training Program
Presented by: Sharon Lalla - New Mexico State University
It¹s not about the technology. It¹s about what we do with the technology. Of course, that¹s a belief that continues to remain at the forefront of most successful technology implementations. In addition, success is determined ultimately by the user of that technology; consequently, a good training program is essential. This session shares experiences about various technical training programs. Best practices will also be described and participants will walk away with guidance on how to begin planning their own technology training programs.

Automated website testing using Selenium
Presented by: Greg Gómez - University of New Mexico
One of the most problematic areas of web development is testing web applications. Testing is time consuming and tedious. Additionally, most testing environments can only test server-side interactions like form behavior and link integrity, limiting their effectiveness. Testing client-side form validation and other scripted functionality (such as AJAX-based features) is usually done by hand, if at all. But it doesn't have to be that way. An open source tool called Selenium lets developers record or write scripts that automate testing of almost anything that can be done in the browser. I'll demonstrate Selenium, covering it's major features, by troubleshooting a typical web application.

IT Asset Management and the Impact on Education in New Mexico
Presented by SchoolDude.com
Prior to 1985, educational organizations invested heavily in physical assets, such as buildings and facility systems. Since then, investment in IT infrastructure has increased rapidly, and educational institutions must now master asset management for both facility and IT assets. This course will review major trends and breakthroughs in IT Asset Management (ITAM) and the emerging technology needed to identify and manage your IT assets, including hardware and software.
You will learn how ITAM can help you:
- Easily track the location and detailed information for all your computers and IT hardware
- Manage IT assets and related reporting effortlessly
- Monitor and manage the software installed on all your computers
- Manage software licenses for the entire organization
- Monitor programs which may have been installed without your knowledge
- Track information which assists your Help Desk in dealing with daily incidents
Kent Hudson will incorporate data from real New Mexico Schools as examples of how reports generated in ITAM can provide necessary reporting for School Boards, auditing, and future possibilities in state and federal funding.

Playing the Part: Using Handhelds and Participatory Simulations across the Curriculum
Presented by: Irene Lee, Betsy Frederick & Celia Einhorn - Super Computing Challenge
Want to get students to think outside the box? Use handhelds to make them players in a real-life simulation of the spread of a disease. Teachers who use PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) give students opportunities to explore in interactive simulation modes. Students develop show understanding of technology operations and concepts. Additionally, these experiences take place in effective learning environments that are content rich and student centered. 30 PDAs for this session will be provided. We will sum up observations and invite audience feedback about the simulation itself and opportunities for its application in their classroom settings. We will point to references that they can use for implementation as well as the download site for the simulation itself. This session should be of special interest to technology and computer science teachers as well as anywhere that problem solving is a part of the curriculum.

University of New Mexico IP Telephony Migration Pilot and Strategy
Presented by: Mark Reynolds-University of New Mexico
In an age of rapidly evolving technology, a strategic plan is the best "hedge" to keeping institutions at the forefront of innovation. The main components that allow institutions to complete and successfully achieve their strategic plan are to identify your direction and intended ROI, create an RFP to articulate your needs and select a vendor(s) to partner with.
The University of New Mexico has proven to be successful at developing a strategic plan and implementing it to meet their campus's communications needs.
The University identified the following criteria as critical when migrating to IP telephony:
- Strategies and goals must be aligned between the telecom and IT departments.
- A network baseline is imperative to evaluate network performance before and after implementation.
- The staff needs to be prepared in advance with education on both the new technology and the products, applications and services.
- ROI calculations must be considered early in the process to facilitate gathering the correct data during the migration process.
- During planning stages, security must be addressed to avoid creating new vulnerabilities.
The University is currently using these lessons learned and the experience they developed to successfully upgrade their extensive network.
