Funding K-12 Technology Projects

Presented by: Polycom Inc
Location: Room 4A

Before teachers and administrators can begin to plan for integrating eLearning and Distance Education within schools, up-to-date Technology Equipment must be available. There are numerous Foundations and Corporate Givers that will assist school systems financially. Finding funding is a vast task. By understanding where to find funding all stakeholders will be able to adequately plan for providing eLearning and Distance Education Technology in a variety of educational settings.
The first step for any organization beginning to seek funding is to know what types of funding opportunities are available to them for eLearning and Distance Education. During this presentation we will review thousands of funding sources to help you find the sources that most closely match the needs of your organization. We will show you how to monitor government and private grant availability by subscribing to multiple databases, newsletters, magazines, list-serves, and other guides that will allow you to access:

  • U.S. Foundations
  • Corporate Giving Programs
  • Government Grants

IT Challenge: Too Much Stuff, Not Enough Staff

Presented by SchoolDude.com
Location: Room 5

E-rate has become the largest and most reliable source of external technology funding for K-12 public and private schools in the United States. Since the E-rate program was created, the percentage of U.S. public school classrooms that are connected to the Internet has grown from 27 percent to more than 90 percent. Over 18.64 Billion has been spent on computer equipment and peripherals since E-Rate’s inception in 1998; however the staff to maintain this technology has not increased as quickly as the equipment has proliferated.

This rapid investment in IT infrastructure now requires educational institutions to master asset management for both facility and IT assets without staffing increases. This course will review major trends and breakthroughs in IT Asset Management and the emerging best practices needed to identify and manage your IT assets, including hardware and software.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about emerging IT Asset Management technology.

This course will explore:

  • Understanding the need to manage IT Assets
  • Learn how to leverage the Internet for IT Asset Management

Integration of E-Learning, Museums and Science Teacher Education

Presented by: Julia Mummert & Debby Knotts & Matthew W. Nyman, University of NM

This presentation will discuss a grant supported collaboration between a University of New Mexico academic department, distance education course development / technical support department, a museum and, public schools in both urban and rural settings.

This Fall, through an NSF-funded program, UNM is offering an online course for high school teachers from Albuquerque Public Schools and Northern New Mexico’s rural school districts. The Natural Science Program at the University of New Mexico, in partnership with UNM’s New Media and Extended Learning and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science (NMMNHS) is offering a 13 week online, graduate level Earth System Science course for high school science educators. The course is based on content developed by the Earth System Science Education Alliance (ESSEA), and is the beginning of a multi-semester online science education program for high school and middle school teachers in central and northern New Mexico. Courses are delivered online and require extensive group work in a virtual community. Opportunities for instructor-student and student-student interaction in this online course are made available using synchronous and asynchronous communication tools via UNM’s learning management system, WebCT Vista, as well as through third-party web-conferencing tools. Field experiences will be developed and facilitated by UNM and NMMNHS scientists and educators. Video captured during field experiences will be available both through streaming and podcasting for current and future students of this course, and to students in similar ESSEA courses nationwide.

October 2006, Gov. Bill Richardson announced his statewide e-learning Program, Innovative Digital Education and Learning (IDEAL). A primary focus of IDEAL is investment in technology and new opportunities for New Mexicans to access education across the state, and to both foster and focus attention on web-based learning. UNM's Natural Sciences course and its subsequent courses for in-service and pre-service middle teachers from the greater Albuquerque area and central and northern New Mexico offer an incredible and well-timed opportunity for improving science education for teachers in New Mexico.
