Asynchronous Distance Education for Special Populations

Presented by: Dr. Rodger Bates, New Mexico State University

Asynchronous distance education extends educational opportunities to geographically and temporally challenged individuals. In addition, through the development of pod-casting, i-Pod and DVD-based instruction, asynchronous distance educational opportunities also may be extended to a number of special populations. Though the internet has emerged as the major purveyor of distance education, a number of special populations are limited in their access to distance education by their inability to access the internet. These populations include deployed military personnel, military personnel in highly mobile units, Native Americans on remote reservations, student-athletes and institutionalized populations. Through the development of i-Pod, pod-casting and DVD-based instruction, New Mexico State University is seeking to address the educational needs of these special populations. The presentation will focus on the unique distance educational needs and the strategies being developed to help serve these special populations. A brief demonstration of a video i-Pod-based course designed for deployed military personnel will be included in this presentation.

Technology-Enhanced Strategies to Increase Learner Engagement

Presented by: Bethany Bovard, New Mexico State University

Summary
One of the biggest challenges educators face in the distance education environment is that of overcoming barriers to success that students perceive. The three biggest barriers that students feel they need to overcome can be categorized as social, administrative, and motivational.

In this presentation, each type of barrier will be addressed. Then, specific and easy-to-implement technology enhanced strategies for breaking down those barriers will be introduced. Finally, a number of real-life examples of each of the strategies will be shown and discussed.

By the end of the presentation, participants will:

  • Understand the student-perceived barriers to success in distance education classes
  • Know how to leverage certain technology-enhanced strategies to overcome those barriers
  • Be able to utilize one or more technology-enhanced strategies in their own distance education courses in order to more fully engage students in the entire learning process.

Participants will also take away from this presentation a set of tutorials that will help them effectively utilize each of the technology-enhancements discussed and a list of alternative strategies that could be easily implemented in certain circumstances where the other strategies would not be feasible.

Paving the way for student success in online education

Presented by: Laura Grant, New Mexico State University

Summary: NMSU’s Office of Distance Education is creating an orientation to provide greater guidance for students registered for online courses at NMSU’s main campus. This orientation is meant to ease first-time online students into a web-based learning environment. It will walk students through course access and provide critical information that will be of use in their online studies. The orientation will provide practical advice and information about:

  • Academic programs
  • Administrative tasks
  • Accessing online courses
  • Necessary technology
  • Online resources

The need for a distance education student orientation is driven by the more varied academic opportunities available at NMSU. More than 2,000 courses at NMSU use WebCT for delivery or as a supplement to face-to-face classes, which provides more educational options to students who previously wouldn’t have the opportunity to progress academically.

These technology-incorporating courses contain students of varied technological capabilities. Although many students experienced in online environments, will not go through the orientation and still successfully make their way through the critical first steps with little guidance and flourish throughout their online education, others are seeking direction. With the increasing number of programs and courses with an online presence, many students are confused about what to do once they register for an online class and what resources are available once the course is in full swing. NMSU will continue offering varied educational opportunities to students with diverse technological abilities, so this guidance is necessary to help all students be successful.
